How to prepare for a Kundalini Yoga Class?

Step 1

If it's your first time going to a Kundalini yoga class, prepare by wearing comfortable, natural clothing that allows your electromagnetic fields to flow and be nurtured throughout the practice. Wear clothing that is made of cotton, linen or another natural, breathable material. It's important to allow your body to breathe and perspire naturally while performing Kundalini asanas.

Step 2

Dress modestly. Make sure your top and bottoms adequately cover you even while bending over. You don't want to have to worry about exposing yourself in class.

Tops

While other yoga classes you've attended may have tank tops and sports bras as the general dress code, Kundalini yoga requires greater thought into what you wear. Instead of wearing skin-tight clothing, look for breathable, light-colored and loose tops, but not too loose to impede your movement; ensure that it is made of pure cotton in order to nurture your electromagnetic field.

Bottoms

Instead of wearing the usual spandex leggings or yoga pants you may wear to a hatha or ashtanga yoga class, try more breathable, natural fabrics that allow you to move. If you're in doubt of what to wear, call ahead to the studio and ask what most other students wear or what the instructor prefers that you wear. This will help give you a better idea of how to be the most comfortable during Kundalini yoga.

Footwear

Kundalini is always practiced barefoot, so prepare accordingly. While you may be able to wear socks with other types of yoga, Kundalini teachings require bare feet in order to create balance and awareness in your body. Practicing yoga barefoot stimulates the 72,000 nerve endings in your feet, one of the most sensitive parts of our bodies.

Step 3

Go with light colored clothing. White clothing is ideal for practicing KY. White contains all colors and balances your aura. Spin a wheel with all colors and you'll see white. White represents purity, peace and cleanliness at a psychological level.

Step 4

Tie your hair back so it will not be a distraction to you during your yoga session.

Step 5

Come with an empty stomach, don’t eat at least two to three hours before; if you have to eat something before class, eat a piece of fruit.

Step 6

You may also bring a sheepskin rug, a towel or a blanket made of natural fibers in place of a typical sticky yoga mat. Bring a water bottle, an open mind and a smile on your face.

Leave jewelry, cell phones-turned off, electronics and eyeglasses (reading glasses may be needed) outside of the yoga room so you can practice your yoga without distraction and in deepest comfort. In order to maintain a peaceful, relaxing and healing environment please turn off cell phone ringers and refrain from speaking on cell phones in the Yoga Room.

Step 7

Due to health concerns arising from exposure to scented products, AquarianYoga is committed to providing a fragrance-free environment. Please be mindful of using any perfumes, colognes, creams or cleaning agents that may be scented.

Step 8

Arrive on time, ideally 5-10 minutes before class, take time to prepare mentally and physically by stretching, meditating and/or warm up prior to the class. You want to slow down, disengage from worldly activities at this moment. Maintaining silence is a good practice that shows respect to your own commitment  and others in the room.

 See you then!
